Today was the first day of a full
week. Caitlyn, Mason, Theresa and Rachel went to Upendo Orphanage. Jeron,
Allie, Elyse, Will and Nathan went to St. Louis Primary School. Matt, Kaylee
and Sophia went on a special mission with Whitney and Mr. McMorrow.
The three of us went to Holy
Childhood Primary School. We went to accompany Mr. McMorrow on business for
Elimu Africa. He is co-founder of the
non-profit organization, Elimu Africa. He donates half his earnings from the
Dala-Dala to this school. The school is
run by nuns that live in the convent nearby. Kaylee and Sophia had a fun
excursion to the bathroom. We had to leave the convent to go to the schools
bathroom and on our way back we stopped to play with the kids from the nursery.
Little did we know, Sister Agnes had prepared lunch for the group and they were
all waiting on Sophia and Kaylee. Whitney being the mature chaperone that she
is, had to come find us and we all had to sprint back to the convent before
Sister Agnes got more distraught that we were lost. Lunch consisted of chicken,
rice and chapatti (flatbread) and was the best thing Matt, Sophia and Kaylee
have ate all trip. Their wasn’t enough room on one table for everyone so Kaylee
and Sophia banished themselves from the group because they were naughty.
Everyone at the convent and school were very welcoming and made us feel at
home. Their hospitality was outstanding.
Everyone who went to the orphanage
and primary school also had a fun-filled morning. The rest of our day was spent
with the Uru students working on our manual labor project. We have all been
working really hard moving dirt and preparing the ground for a basketball court. Our relationship with the students
grows closer every day.
From Dick:
We have had very little illness strike our group. We have had one student who has been sick and has missed a little work. Nobody else in the group has been sick and had to miss work or any activity. The students are very healthy and are doing very well. The cohesiveness in the group is amazing. The 8 girls and the 5 boys are getting along very well - it really is quite unique. We have no blog tomorrow because we have our Chagga drum and dance evening (Chagga is the local tribe around Moshi). This year we will be joined by several of our new friends from Uru Secondary School. We will eat a traditional meal followed by a drum and dance show that includes dancing by our students. It will go a little late so nobody will have time to blog. Somebody will blog about this at a later date. You should all be very proud of the spirit that your young adult is engaging in there activities. The blogs may not represent how much they are enjoying themselves and how much they are engaged in our daily activities. Each evening we are involved in prayer and meaningful discussion. I would take these 13 students anywhere in the world! Thank you for allowing them to be involved in the 2017 Africa trip!
